Time waits for no one and that’s as true for the Apple Watch as it is for us humans. The Apple Watch Series 9 is yesterday’s news thanks to the 2024 launch of the Apple Watch Series 10. It also pushed the older Apple Watch Series 8 further down the pecking order, but that just means that it’s an even better buy if you can find one at the right price. Not too long ago it was considered to be one of the best smartwatches around, and quality like that doesn’t disappear in just a couple of years. Unfortunately, the release of new models means that the Series 8 is increasingly difficult to find in stock, but you can go the refurbished route.
The 2022 Apple Watch has all the essential features, including workout- and sleep-tracking, heart-rate monitoring, on-wrist notifications and an always-on display. It was the first Apple Watch to come with a temperature sensor, which can be used for ovulation tracking, and it has neat features like car-crash detection so emergency services and contacts can be notified in the event of an accident. Although it’s not as rugged as the Apple Watch Ultra or Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Series 8 is still crack-resistant, IP6X-rated dust-resistant and swim-proof with WR50 water resistance.
The Apple Watch Series 8 retails at $399 for the GPS-only model, with the GPS and cellular version going for $499 and up. The Series 8 was officially discontinued by Apple, but you can snap up a solid deal on one while supplies last at third-party retailers.
Best Buy doesn’t currently have any new Apple Watch Series 8 models available, although you can still shop the refurbished lineup.
Target is the only retailer currently offering some new Apple Watch Series 8 models while refurbished models are also available if you’d prefer to save some extra money. Band and color combinations are extremely limited, though.
